Clearer reflections. More depth.

What Does Paint Correction Actually Do?

Paint correction uses professional machine polishing to improve suitable glossy paint by reducing swirl marks, haze, light scratches, and other surface imperfections. The goal is deeper gloss, clearer reflections, and greater depth of color while preserving the finish.

Polishing removes a small amount of the finish. The right plan balances the change you want to see with the paint that needs to stay.

The hand-built, hand-painted Cadillac CELESTIQ shown here received one-step paint correction to reduce delivery marks and refine finish imperfections before ceramic coating. The improvement you notice on your own vehicle may be a clearer reflection in the hood, richer color in sunlight, or fewer washing marks under bright lights. We talk through those priorities with you, so the recommendation is about enjoying your vehicle rather than simply adding more polishing stages.

What Can Improve vs. What Needs Repair?

Depth and paint condition matter more than how dramatic a mark looks in a photo. We inspect the vehicle before recommending the work.

Not every visible mark needs polishing. Some mineral deposits and contamination can be removed through cleaning, while defects within the finish may require correction. Inspection helps us determine the difference.

Improve the finish

Often Improvable with Correction

  • Swirl marks and fine wash marring
  • Haze, holograms, and some previous polishing or sanding marks
  • Lighter surface scratches
  • Mild oxidation on sound paint
  • Shallower water-spot marks
Repair the damage

May Need Repair Instead

  • Rock chips, missing paint, or exposed primer
  • Deep scratches and severe chemical or bird-dropping damage
  • Peeling, cracking, burned, or failing clear coat
  • Dents, rust, corrosion, or failing previous repairs
  • Color or texture mismatch, overspray damage, and marks beneath existing film

A scratch that catches a fingernail or shows missing paint may become less noticeable, but is unlikely to disappear completely through polishing. Heavy texture may need separately approved work; touch-up or repainting is a different service.

Not Sure Which Category Your Paint Falls Into?

Bring us the vehicle. We will inspect the finish and show you what is worth improving before you commit to the work.

Inspection before correction

The Paint Decides the Plan.

How much correction makes sense? We combine what you want to improve with what the finish can safely support.

Visual Inspection

We examine the marks, previous repairs, thin or sensitive areas, edges, and body lines under clear lighting. Your priorities help us decide where an improvement matters most.

Thickness Readings Where Useful

Readings can flag unusual areas and signs of previous work. A common gauge does not tell us exactly how much clear coat remains on every panel, and it is not useful on every material.

A Small Test Area

A test spot shows how the paint responds before we commit to the polishing approach. Cleaning can uncover marks that wax, dirt, or residue had hidden.

Paint Preservation

We leave a deeper defect when chasing it would remove an unreasonable amount of paint. Thin, unstable, or poorly responding areas may need less correction, repair, or no further polishing.

The best finish your existing paint can safely support.

One-Step, Multi-Step or Selected-Area Paint Correction?

One-step polish
One primary polishing stage for gloss, lighter swirls, and mild haze where suitable.
Multi-step correction
Additional cutting and refining stages when heavier marks and the paint condition justify the work.
Selected-area correction
Individual panels or isolated concerns can need a different plan. Sanding and heavier repair work require separate inspection and approval.

More stages do not automatically mean a better result. We choose the least aggressive approach that delivers the agreed improvement. Polishing cannot be repeated indefinitely.

Let’s Find the Right Level for Your Paint.

We explain what the inspection and test area show before changing the agreed plan.

Our Paint Correction Process

  1. Inspect + Agree on the Goal

Discuss the finish you want, previous work, sensitive areas, and the written quote. We confirm the schedule around the vehicle and services involved.

  2. Clean + Prepare the Paint

Wash away loose dirt, then safely remove bonded contamination such as iron, tar, and residue where the finish allows. This reveals the true starting point.

  3. Test + Correct

Take readings where useful, test the paint, then polish panel by panel using the agreed approach. We check the improvement as we work.

  4. Inspect + Prepare for What Comes Next

Check clarity under suitable lighting and remove polishing residue. Return the corrected finish as agreed, or prepare it for coating or PPF included in the project. At pickup, we explain its care.

Your quote defines the work. Touch-up, wet sanding, paint repair, body work, coating, and PPF are separate unless listed.

Special Paint & Surfaces Need a Different Plan.

Matte / Satin Paint

Normal gloss polishing can leave permanent shiny or uneven patches. These finishes need care that preserves their intended appearance.

Existing PPF / Vinyl

Film needs film-appropriate care. Normal paint polishing is not automatically suitable, and satin film can become uneven.

Repainted Panels

Previous repairs may respond differently and need a conservative approach. Fresh paint must follow the body shop’s and paint manufacturer’s guidance before polishing, coating, or film.

Composite / Plastic / Carbon / Trim

These materials, edges, and smaller finishes need individual evaluation. We confirm what can be included instead of treating every panel alike.

Tell us about specialty surfaces when booking. Explore matte and satin protection or ask which care suits your finish.

Correct First. Protect What You Like Afterward.

Decide how much paint improvement you want before coating or clear PPF goes on. Neither service replaces repairing damaged paint.

Paint Correction: Improve the Finish

Polishing improves the existing paint. It does not add physical protection or stop future marks.

Ceramic Coating: Make Care Easier

Ceramic coating adds gloss, helps resist everyday environmental contamination, and makes routine washing and drying easier. Paint correction improves the finish beneath it, while the coating helps you maintain that result.

Preparation Included With Coating Packages

  • Core: Quick preparation without machine polishing.
  • Plus and Elite: One-step polishing on suitable glossy paint.
  • Signature and Signature Complete: Two-step correction where safe.

Matte finishes and existing film receive preparation appropriate to those surfaces.

Some paint refinement is already included with qualifying ceramic coating packages. If your vehicle needs more extensive correction than the selected package includes, we will explain the additional work and pricing before proceeding.

PPF: Add a Physical Protective Layer

Paint protection film is a replaceable layer against road debris and wear within its intended use. It does not repair chips or deep scratches, prevent dents, or stop every impact. We check any repairs are ready before installation.

Does Your Vehicle Need Paint Correction?

New Vehicles

New does not always mean defect-free. Transport, dealership washing, water spots, and delivery preparation can leave marks. Sometimes a light polish is enough.

Daily Drivers

Reducing the swirls and haze you notice most can offer a worthwhile balance of appearance and paint preservation.

Black / Dark Paint

Dark colors reveal fine marring, haze, and reflections more clearly. The paint itself still determines the appropriate approach.

Collector / Older / Special Vehicles

Original paint, previous repairs, neglect, and long-term preservation may matter more than removing every mark. Damaged areas may need repair first.

The condition of the paint and the result you want matter more than its age. Gentle washing and drying help keep new swirls from returning. See our coating care guide if coating is part of your project.

For correction-only work, follow the washing and handling guidance supplied at pickup. Coating cure instructions apply only when coating is included in your installation.

Paint Correction FAQs

What is paint correction?

Professional machine polishing improves existing glossy paint by reducing suitable surface marks. The goal is more gloss, clarity, and depth of color, while preserving the finish.

How much does paint correction cost?

It is custom quoted after an in-person inspection. Vehicle size, condition, previous work, the improvement you want, and associated services determine the final written price.

What is one-step vs. multi-step correction?

One-step polishing uses one main stage for gloss and lighter marks. Multi-step correction adds cutting and refining where justified. More stages do not automatically produce a better or safer result.

What percentage of scratches can be removed?

We do not promise a percentage. Inspection and a small test area show what can improve without removing too much of the finish. The depth and condition matter more than a blanket number.

Can correction remove deep scratches or repair rock chips?

Deep scratches may become less noticeable but can need repair, especially if they catch a fingernail or expose missing paint. Chips are missing paint; polishing cannot replace it.

Can water spots and oxidation be corrected?

Surface deposits, shallower water-spot marks, and mild oxidation may improve on sound paint. Deep etching or peeling, cracking, or failing clear coat may need repair instead.

Does a new vehicle need paint correction?

Sometimes. Washing, transport, and delivery preparation can leave visible marks. We inspect the vehicle and recommend only the preparation its finish needs.

Can black paint be corrected?

Yes, where the paint condition allows. Dark colors make fine marks and haze easier to see; inspection and a test spot help determine the appropriate work.

Can matte or satin paint be polished?

Normal gloss-paint polishing can leave permanent shiny patches. Matte and satin paint, film, and other specialty finishes need care suited to their intended appearance.

Should I correct the paint before ceramic coating or PPF?

If visible defects bother you, decide the improvement first. Coating does not hide them, and clear film can leave existing damage visible. We coordinate preparation with your chosen service; repairs and extra correction must be included in the quote.

Does paint correction protect the vehicle?

It improves appearance, but does not add physical protection. Coating helps with cleaning and environmental resistance. PPF adds a physical layer against road debris and wear within its intended use.

How long will corrected paint stay swirl-free?

It depends on washing, drying, storage, and use. Gentle care helps maintain the result, but new swirls can develop. Ask for care guidance at pickup.

Your paint. Your priorities.

What Would You Like to Improve About Your Paint?

Tell us what you drive, what bothers you about the finish, and whether any panels have been repainted. We will inspect the vehicle and explain the improvements worth making.

Paint correction is custom quoted after inspection. Ceramic coating, PPF, touch-up, wet sanding, and body repair are separate unless listed in the written quote.

Photos can help begin the discussion. We will explain how to provide them when arranging your inspection; the final recommendation and price follow an in-person assessment.
