What Does Automotive Glass Ceramic Coating Do?

Rain, bugs, road film, and winter residue can make your vehicle’s glass frustrating to keep clean. XPEL FUSION PLUS GLASS adds a clear, water-repellent surface treatment that helps rainwater bead and makes ordinary contamination easier to remove during routine cleaning.

At Kickin’ Customs in Raynham, we carefully prepare and coat compatible exterior glass, helping drivers throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island spend less time dealing with stubborn buildup.

Water-Repellent Glass

Rainwater beads and can move more readily across the treated surface. The effect depends on airflow, glass angle, rainfall and driving conditions.

Easier Routine Cleaning

Bugs, road film and ordinary grime can release with less effort from properly coated and maintained glass.

Care for New England Driving

Rain, winter spray, pollen and road residue make glass a frequent cleaning task. Coating helps simplify that routine without replacing regular care.

Use your wipers, washer fluid and defrosting whenever visibility requires them.

Glass Coating vs. Windshield Protection Film vs. Window Tint

Glass Coating

A clear treatment on compatible exterior glass for water repellency and easier cleaning. It does not add an impact-protection film or provide window tint’s heat and privacy benefits.

Windshield Protection Film

A separate, replaceable exterior film layer that helps reduce windshield damage from road debris. It does not repair existing chips or cracks.

Explore windshield protection film

Window Tint

Interior window film selected for heat, UV, glare, privacy and appearance goals, depending on the product. It does not add exterior water repellency.

Explore window tint

Interior tint and exterior glass coating normally treat opposite sides of the glass. Coating over WPF is a separate compatibility decision: we confirm the actual film, coating, and approved maintenance guidance before applying it.

Can Your Vehicle’s Glass Be Ceramic Coated?

We inspect your exterior glass before confirming the service. Its condition and any existing treatments help determine the preparation needed and which surfaces we can coat.

Glass Condition Checked First

We look for chips, cracks, previous repairs, and other damage that needs attention. Any necessary glass repair or replacement should be completed before coating. We’ll also flag worn or damaged wiper blades.

Previous Treatments and Buildup Removed

Rain repellents, waxes, and surface residue can interfere with the new coating. We clean and prepare the glass, addressing existing treatments and buildup so the coating can bond properly.

Specialty Surfaces Reviewed Separately

Let us know if your vehicle has windshield protection film, plastic windows, or specialty glass. These surfaces require a compatibility check. Camera lenses, sensor covers, and mirrors are not automatically included.

How Is Automotive Glass Ceramic Coating Applied?

Clean, properly prepared glass gives the coating a suitable surface to bond to. Careful application and a final inspection help deliver a clear, consistent finish across the glass you choose.

1. Inspect & Prepare

We inspect the glass, previous treatments, contamination, mineral deposits, and wiper condition, then clean and decontaminate the selected surfaces with appropriate products and methods.

2. Refine & Apply

We address correctable surface contamination, remove incompatible residue, and apply XPEL FUSION PLUS GLASS to the agreed exterior surfaces. Substantial mineral restoration, polishing, glass repair, or replacement is evaluated separately.

3. Inspect & Cure

We check for even application, clarity, residue, and streaking, then explain the required dry period, pickup timing, and aftercare before delivery.

Ceramic Coating Projects at the Shop

Care and Warranty After Pickup

Give the Coating Time to Cure

Keep the glass dry for at least 24 hours at 72°F or warmer, or 48 hours below 72°F. XPEL lists a 48-hour full cure.

We explain pickup timing and when cleaners, rain repellents, and washer additives can be used. Tell us about outdoor parking or travel so we can plan around the weather. Contact us if the glass gets wet before the required dry period ends.

Keep Glass and Wipers Clean

Functioning wipers remain necessary. Avoid unnecessary use on dry or dirty glass during initial curing, but always use wipers, washer fluid, and defrosting when visibility requires them.

After curing, use coating-safe glass cleaner and soft microfiber towels. Remove contamination promptly, dry after washing, and keep wiper blades clean and in good condition. Ask us before using abrasives, scrapers, harsh chemicals, or polish, or if streaking or reduced beading persists.

Understand Your Warranty

XPEL FUSION PLUS GLASS has a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty from installation, subject to its written terms. It covers loss of water repellency and environmental contaminant staining caused solely by a manufacturing defect. Rock chips, cracks, scratches, water spots, and improper-care damage are excluded.

Keep warranty registration, installation, and inspection records. Follow XPEL’s care instructions and required annual inspections with an XPEL-certified FUSION PLUS installer; inspection and maintenance fees may apply.

Repaired or replaced glass needs recoating. Check with us before polishing. Warranty replacement does not restart the original coverage period.

Automotive Glass Ceramic Coating FAQs

What does glass ceramic coating do?

It creates a thin, clear hydrophobic layer that helps water move across treated exterior glass and makes ordinary bugs, road film, salt residue, and grime easier to remove.

Does glass coating improve visibility in the rain?

It can help water bead and move more readily when speed, glass angle, airflow, rainfall, and surface condition allow. It does not guarantee visibility or safety, and drivers must continue using wipers, washer fluid, defrosting, safe speed, and normal judgment.

Does glass ceramic coating prevent windshield chips or cracks?

No. Glass coating is for water repellency and easier cleaning. Windshield protection film is a separate physical layer for reducing road-debris damage, and severe impacts can still damage the glass.

Is glass coating the same as windshield protection film?

No. Glass coating primarily improves water behavior and cleaning. Windshield protection film adds a physical film layer designed to help reduce road-debris damage. Neither service guarantees that the windshield cannot be damaged.

Is glass coating the same as window tint?

No. Window tint is normally installed on the interior glass for heat rejection, UV reduction, glare management, privacy, and appearance. Glass coating is applied to approved exterior glass for hydrophobic behavior and easier cleaning.

Do I still need windshield wipers?

Yes. Coating does not eliminate wipers, washer fluid, or defrosting. Wipers may be needed at low speeds, in heavy rain, snow, spray, dirty conditions, or whenever visibility requires them.

Can glass coating cause wiper chatter or streaking?

Worn blades, dirty glass, old rain repellents, incompatible washer products, contamination, or uneven residue can contribute to chatter, skipping, haze, or streaking. Proper preparation and clean, serviceable blades reduce the risk but do not guarantee it cannot occur.

Can coated glass still get water spots?

Yes. Mineral-heavy water can dry on the surface and leave deposits or staining. XPEL advises against allowing water to evaporate on coated surfaces.

Will coating remove chips, scratches, pitting, or etched water spots?

No. The coating is clear and preserves the condition beneath it. Correctable surface contamination or deposits may be addressed during preparation, but permanent glass damage remains.

What does the $195 windshield option include?

Windshield coating starts at $195 and covers the exterior windshield surface with condition review, cleaning, preparation, coating, and care guidance. Repairs and substantial restoration are separate.

What does the $495 windshield, sides and rear option include?

Starting at $495, this option covers the exterior windshield, side windows, and rear glass. Standard sunroof coating starts at $150; panoramic or full glass roof coating starts at $250. Roof glass is separate outside Signature Complete. Specialty surfaces are assessed separately.

Can glass coating be applied over window tint?

Automotive tint is usually installed on the interior side while glass coating is applied to approved exterior glass, so the services can commonly coexist. The tint and glass should still be inspected before work begins.

Can glass coating be applied over windshield protection film?

Sometimes. WPF is a separate exterior film surface with its own care products and maintenance requirements. Product compatibility should be confirmed before applying any coating over it.

How long must the glass stay dry?

XPEL’s current technical data sheet lists 24 hours before getting wet at or above 72 degrees Fahrenheit and 48 hours below 72 degrees. The listed full cure time is 48 hours.

How long is the XPEL FUSION PLUS GLASS warranty?

XPEL currently publishes a 2-year limited warranty against covered loss of hydrophobicity and environmental contaminant staining caused by a manufacturing defect, subject to professional installation, registration, maintenance, inspection, exclusions, and the current written terms.

Are the prices exact for every vehicle?

They are starting prices for typical serviceable automotive glass. Large glass areas, panoramic roofs, additional panels, mineral deposits, prior coatings, damage, and corrective preparation can change the final quote.

Where is the service performed?
