The First 48 Hours: Let the Installation Settle.

Do not wash the vehicle for at least 48 hours after installation. This gives the film time to adhere without washing pressure, repeated wiping or edge disturbance. Leave the perimeter alone and avoid pulling, pressing or trimming it.

Rain does not apply the same rubbing or concentrated pressure as washing. Use the wipers when needed for a clear view; aftercare must never take priority over safe visibility. Keep blades clean and use washer fluid rather than wiping dry road grit.

Bugs, bird droppings and other residue should not be left to bake on while you wait. Soften and gently remove the affected surface contamination with warm water, pH-neutral soap and clean microfiber, keeping clear of the edges. Contact us if it will not release gently.

Contact us promptly if an edge lifts, film becomes loose, or dirt reaches exposed adhesive. Leave that edge alone. For persistent distortion or any concern affecting your view, stop driving when safe and arrange help before continuing. Call 617-431-6858.

How to Wash Windshield Protection Film

After the initial no-wash period, regular gentle hand washing removes the grit and residue that wipers would otherwise drag across the film. Work on a cool surface, out of direct sun, using clean materials.

  1. Rinse Away Loose Grit

Rinse the windshield before touching it with a mitt or towel. Do not dry-wipe road dust or try to scrub embedded debris away.

  2. Wash With Clean Materials

Use XPEL Wash Solution or Foam Soap according to its directions and a soft microfiber mitt. Keep rinse water separate from wash solution with the two-bucket method. Work in straight lines with light pressure, rinsing the mitt as it becomes dirty.

  3. Rinse Thoroughly

Remove soap residue with clean water. If using a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at least 36 inches away and use a wide 40-degree nozzle. Never aim into film edges or pressure wash a lifted or damaged area.

  4. Dry the Surface

Use a clean, soft microfiber towel to gently dry the film. Leaving water to evaporate can leave mineral deposits that affect appearance and water behavior. Check the blades for grit before the next use.

Bugs and Bird Droppings

Remove these promptly. Warm water and pH-neutral soap help soften residue so it can be lifted with microfiber rather than scrubbed. XPEL SiO2 Waterless Wash is listed for on-the-go spot cleaning; follow its directions.

Sap and Tar

XPEL’s WPF instructions allow a 50/50 water and isopropyl-alcohol mixture for stubborn sap or tar, applied to a microfiber towel to wipe the affected spot. Use it for targeted cleaning, keep edges undisturbed, and stop if residue will not release gently.

Water Spots and Bonded Residue

Hard water, sprinkler spray and road residue can leave deposits that make the film look hazy. Addressing buildup early matters because deposits can become harder to remove after sitting in sun or heat.

Start with normal gentle washing and drying. Persistent deposits or haze need assessment before stronger cleaning. Do not use razors, abrasive glass polish, harsh solvents or waxes and polishes containing dyes or abrasives.

Use windshield-film instructions for windshield film. Products intended for paint PPF or bare glass are not automatically appropriate here.

Clean Blades Protect the Surface You Look Through.

Wipers repeatedly cross the same film surface. Grit caught against a blade can leave repeated lines, while a worn rubber edge can chatter or smear. Inspect the blades regularly and after driving through heavy grit or winter spray. Gently clean them and replace cracked, hardened, damaged or persistently streaking blades.

XPEL recommends a new set of premium wiper blades when the film is installed. Replacement blades are not part of the published WPF installation price unless included in your individual quote.

Use suitable washer fluid before wiping a dirty windshield, and choose a winter-rated fluid when freezing temperatures are expected. Do not run blades frozen to the glass. Let them thaw and release first. Continue using the wipers whenever needed for safe visibility; if they cannot clear the view, stop when safe and address the problem.

Persistent chatter, unusual drag or streaks after basic cleaning may need a film and blade inspection. More pressure or repeated dry wiping can make the problem worse.

Windshield Film Care for New England Driving

Winter: Thaw Before Clearing

Do not use ice scrapers or snow brushes directly on the filmed windshield. That includes plastic scrapers and soft brushes. Let the defroster and suitable de-icing methods loosen ice, then allow frozen wipers to release before operating them.

Keep winter-rated washer fluid topped up. After the initial care period, rinse away road salt and gritty spray regularly instead of letting blades grind it across the surface.

Highway Miles and Warm Weather

Highway grime and insects build up quickly on Route 24, I-95 and I-195. Soften and remove residue promptly. Rinse pollen and dust before wiping, and wash in shade so soap and mineral-rich water do not dry on the film.

After an impact, inspect the area when safely parked. A mark in film does not establish whether the glass underneath is sound.

Coastal Air and Fall Debris

Salt spray leaves a film of residue, especially after coastal trips. Use a gentle rinse and wash once the initial waiting period is complete, then dry the windshield.

Remove leaves and debris around the wipers before use. Treat sap as a spot-cleaning task and seek help if it resists gentle removal rather than scraping it off.

XPEL WPF Restore and Your Six-Month Visit

XPEL WPF Restore is the dedicated maintenance product for refreshing water behavior on this film. Clean the surface first so you are not sealing in residue or mistaking contamination for wear.

Your installation includes one complimentary WPF Restore application at approximately six months. Follow the Restore instructions supplied for your film and product between visits, and contact us if water repellency or clarity changes sooner.

  1. Start Clean and Dry

Wash and dry the windshield gently before applying Restore. Do not use it to cover up persistent haze or an unresolved visibility concern.

  2. Prepare the Product

Shake the bottle well and follow the instructions supplied with it.

  3. Work in Sections

Divide the windshield into four manageable sections and lightly mist the product onto the film as directed.

  4. Spread and Buff

Use a clean, new microfiber towel to spread it evenly and buff to a smooth, clear finish. Check the view through the windshield before driving.

Restore does not fix deep scratches, impact damage, lifting or every cause of haze. If normal cleaning does not restore a clear view, arrange an inspection.

Match the Concern to the Next Step.

ConcernSafe first stepWhen to contact us
Haze or water spotsGently wash and dry the film; check for surface residue. If the haze persists, returns quickly or affects visibility. Do not add polish or stronger cleaners to diagnose it yourself.
Streaking or chatterInspect and clean the blades and film; replace worn blades. If ordinary cleaning and sound blades do not resolve it, or the view is not safely clear.
Changed water behaviorClean the film and follow the supplied Restore instructions. If clarity or water repellency changes sooner than expected or does not respond to appropriate care.
Lifting or an open edgeLeave the edge alone. Do not press it down, peel it, trim it or wash beneath it.Promptly, especially if film is loose or contamination reaches exposed adhesive.
Impact, cut or deep damageInspect while safely parked and avoid disturbing the film.Arrange assessment of both film and glass. Film replacement, glass repair or replacement may be needed.
Persistent distortion or impaired visibilityStop driving when safe. Do not assume it will disappear through use.Arrange help before continuing to drive.

WPF Care Questions

Can rain or necessary wiper use damage fresh film?

Rain is different from washing or scrubbing. Avoid washing for at least the first 48 hours and leave the edges alone. Use the wipers whenever safe visibility requires them, with suitable washer fluid and clean blades. Contact us if visibility is impaired or an edge moves.

What if bugs or bird droppings land on newly installed film?

Remove surface contamination promptly and gently with warm water, pH-neutral soap and a clean microfiber towel. Soften it first and avoid scrubbing or disturbing the edges. Contact us if it will not release with gentle cleaning.

Can I pressure wash the windshield film?

Avoid washing during the initial 48-hour period. After the initial care period, keep a pressure-washer nozzle at least 36 inches away, use a wide 40-degree nozzle and never direct the spray into the film edges. Do not pressure wash lifting or damaged film.

Can I use an ice scraper or snow brush on the film?

No. Keep both off the filmed windshield, including plastic scrapers and soft snow brushes. Use the defroster and suitable de-icing methods, let frozen blades release, and use washer fluid rated for winter conditions.

What should I do about wiper chatter or streaking?

Clean the film gently and inspect the blades for dirt, wear or damage. Replace worn blades as needed. If chatter, streaks, haze or changed visibility persist, arrange an inspection rather than scrubbing harder or adding products at random.

Does every mark mean the film needs replacement?

No. Residue, mineral deposits, blade contamination and film damage can look similar. Start with gentle cleaning where safe. Persistent marks, lifting or impact damage need assessment so we can distinguish maintenance from installation attention or replacement.

How often should I apply WPF Restore?

Follow the Restore instructions supplied for your film and product between visits. Your installation includes one complimentary shop application at approximately six months. Contact us sooner if clarity or water repellency changes; that visit is not a reason to leave a problem unaddressed.

Will Restore remove scratches or repair lifting?

No. It refreshes the water-repellent surface. Deep scratches, damaged film, open edges and persistent distortion need professional assessment rather than another Restore application.

Which cleaning products should I use?

XPEL’s windshield-film care instructions recommend XPEL Wash Solution or Foam Soap for regular hand washing and XPEL SiO2 Waterless Wash for on-the-go spot cleaning. Follow the product instructions and use clean microfiber materials. Body-film polish or bare-glass products are not automatically suitable for WPF.

Can I use an automatic car wash?

Hand washing is preferred. Brush-style washes can drag grit across the film and its edges. Use the gentle hand-washing sequence above, and keep pressure-washer spray at least 36 inches away with a wide nozzle and away from edges.
